I love how dancing helps me express myself in so many different ways. But I always struggle with the question: What is your favourite dance?
As a "polydancer", it's hard to pick one because I can always discover new feelings and new experiences in each dance style.
So here we go — a review of how different dance styles bring out different parts of me:
Salsa gives me so much joy, fire, and passion. It's hard to be down when I hear Salsa music. There's so much joy and positive energy in the music and the dance.
Bachata is my first and longest love partner. Bachata teaches me how to be soft, feminine, flexible, and expressive.
Kizomba teaches me to slow down, build deep connection, savour little movements, and pay attention to tiny details.
Zouk teaches me to let go of my balance (the tilted axis got me scared at first), to be fluid and flowy, and to trust my partner completely.
Pole dance gives me incredible strength, flexibility, pushes my limits, and improves my spatial awareness (imagine spinning several times upside down). Pole dance also helps me build a lot of self-trust, knowing I can save myself when doing new "dangerous" tricks.
Heels / striptease / twerking teach me to be fiercely feminine, unapologetic, and badass. I learn how to strut with so much confidence with my head held high.
Contemporary dance smashes the ideal of aesthetic and invites me to be more free, to try new ways of moving, and telling stories with my body.
Hip hop freestyle teaches me grooves and swag, helps me explore more "masc" sides with explosive movements.
What about you? Are you a polydancer? What dance brings out something different in you?
